Snake Safety Lecture
For Kindergarten and Primary School students up to Grade 3.
For grades 4, 5 & 6 Primary see the lecture: Snakes, Gene pools & Bio-diversity.Years 4 - 12 & Tertiary
|
This session is designed for groups of up to 30 students.
More than this number tends to get a bit crowded and sometimes a little rough on the animals.
Each session lasts from 45-55 minutes. The lesson covers fallacies and home truths about snakes, also fear and how to overcome that fear so a person can always be level headed around snakes. |
| The children learn about the four dangerously venomous snakes of Victoria. How to identify them at a glance, especially how to pick a Brown snake from a Copperhead. These are two very important snakes in Victoria which many people find confusing. |
|
|
The children learn how, when encountering a snake in the wild, to view that snake safely and learn something about the
creature, without the drama.
The section on venomous snakes always ends up with First Aid for snakebite. However, after this lesson, the chance of snakebite is greatly reduced. |
The children are then offered the chance to handle a selection of pythons: Children's pythons, Carpet pythons etc. By the time we get to the pythons most children don't want to leave the room to make way for the next group to come in. By the way, pythons are a non-venomous type of snake. Sorry, but the children don't get to handle venomous snakes!

Classroom Requirements
For this lecture a science or art classroom is best suited, because water must be available. The children must be able to wash their hands as the pythons are very sensitive to bugs. At the end of the session the children can wash their hands before leaving the classroom.
| A warm classroom of 25°c is ideal. |
| This lecture is not really suitable for crèches or children under four year old. |
| Although no child is ever forced to touch anything, most children love this hands-on experience. The occasional child who chooses just to look, still benefits greatly from the activity. |
