Snakes, Gene Pools & Biodiversity
For Grades 4, 5 & 6 Primary and all Secondary and Tertiary levels.
This lecture is for Grades 4, 5 and 6 Primary, all years in Secondary and Tertiary levels, but is excellent for years 7 and 9. After year 9 many students never touch on biology again, so if they take up a career in Law, Economics or Politics they may never know what is really at stake or what their actions could eventually be responsible for.
Resulting from this lecture all students will understand, in a matter of fact way, the true value of a Keystone species. They will also understand the obvious value of Broadly-based as opposed to Narrowly-based gene pools. They will understand instinctively that the protection of wilderness areas has nothing to do with greenies causing trouble.
They will learn about feral animals and how they can affect Keystone species and other fauna, rainforests and plant life in general.
Because our oceans and the ocean's creatures are in serious trouble, this is an important part of the lecture.
The lecture SNAKE SAFETY is also part of this lecture because reptiles are an important part of the environment and all students do love this part of the session. To keep the lecture lively, we commence with the venomous snakes then do bio-diversity. Lastly, we have a hands on session with the pythons. Sorry, but the kids don't get to handle the venomous snakes. 90 minutes is an ideal time for this lecture, so the normal double period of most schools works well.
The students will never forget this part of their life.

Classroom Requirements
Water must be available for the students to wash their hands. A science room is ideal for this lecture with the tables and chairs either out of the room or stacked up to the side. Halls are seldom appropriate for these lectures.
